I wanted to write this review when I was into the movie about a third of the way, because it is all about how the number "23" is is surprisingly relevant to so many things in life.
At the point in the film where Jim Carey's character begins to obsess about the number 23 appearing everywhere, I suddenly decided to look at the clock on my bedroom wall and it was exactly AM!!!
This is for real, I began to think, then in the very next scene, Carey rolls over in bed and looks at his clock At that point, I was amazed at the coincidence and was hooked and enjoyed the rest of the film, trying to spot the "Easter Eggs" of the number 23 scattered throughout the film.
The movie is a mystery wrapped in an enigma full of paradox and it kept getting deeper and deeper into the madness as the film progressed. In spite of some minor plot problems, I found the film to be one of the best I have seen in a while and would highly recommend it.
I saw this movie when it came before cellphones apparently but I forgot what a good movie this is. Jim Carey, who I never cared for until this film was astonishing.
What a performer! Watching him descend into madness and sanity concurrently was amazing. This is a clever and imaginative movie.
It's quite the accomplishment to have the story within the story prove the story behind the story. This was true suspense, keeping the viewer off center and guessing what really happened.
In my opinion, his wife published the book. She bought the book and insisted he read it. She kept telling him "wait and see what happens further on.
She provides the book, the PO box, and leads him on. I think she might have started to see the insane Walter? What happened to her when the doctor told her Walter's past?
Why did the doctor sit on all this for 13 years, especially with a murder and an innocent man convicted?
Definitely a great film, dense and interwoven. I like that the setup for the story didn't take the entire first half of the movie.
A wise choice because the atmosphere develops when the book enters the story. We saw ample proof that Walter was an easy going, humorous guy before 23 catches him again.
My near-sighted 78 yr old husband downloaded this movie by mistake. About 10 days later, I read the email saying we bought it.
I tried to call Customer Service, but due to the corona virus, they are not taking calls. I tried to find out how I could cancel it on line but could not figure out how to do it.
If anyone at Amazon reads this, I sure would appreciate getting a credit for it. We are very good customers who made a mistake.
Unfortunately much of it doesn't hold up under scrutiny, big leaps of faith are needed and the finale fizzles out in a whimper. But mostly it's thought provoking for the right reasons.
Suicide Blonde. Visually it's a most arresting piece. The present world inhabited by Walter and his family is filled with bold reds and greens, while his flashback world, where he is detective Fingerling, is full of oblique decor, high contrast lighting and skewed angles.
Carrey came in for some criticism, but he sits the role s well, especially as Walter's mind starts to fracture. Everyone else is up to scratch with par performances, while Williams provides a score that mixes eerie foreboding with the rumbles of psychological unease.
Not for everyone, obviously, and it asks a lot of forgiveness for its faults. Yet there is a better film here than I was led to believe it was.
