After traveling to the future to protect sensitive information from Control, an artificial intelligence destined to destroy all life, Michael Burnham arrives in the year and learns that she was successful—life exists in this future.
Burnham crashes into the ship of Cleveland "Book" Booker, a courier transporting stolen cargo. He explains that in an event called "The Burn", most of the galaxy's dilithium exploded destroying many starships, including most of Starfleet.
Now the galaxy is disconnected and is no longer governed by the United Federation of Planets. Burnham helps Book protect his cargo, an endangered trance worm that he is taking to a sanctuary, from other couriers.
In the season 7 episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation "Force of Nature," it was revealed that going to warp in the same space over and over again was analogous with walking over the same spot of carpet for years — eventually, you'll wear a hole in it.
Wearing a hole in space means creating a rift and causing a destructive spatial rupture. In short, it was concluded that warp travel would have to change, if not be stopped entirely.
Data Brent Spiner showed a study in "Force of Nature" that suggests things could get significantly worse within 40 years of the episode's air date.
Star Trek: Discovery is set centuries later. Since dilithium still existed until recently, we have to assume that either a solution was found or there are a lot of ruptures in space everywhere.
It is possible that the Hekarans who discovered this flaw with warp travel are somehow responsible for the destruction of most dilithium.
Perhaps this was an act of terrorism. Regardless, this piece of Trek lore is something to keep in the back of your mind as Discovery 's third season progresses.
Star Trek: Discovery itself tends to have a very "Michael did it" mentality. While Star Trek is essentially an ensemble franchise, Burnham is very much at the center of Discovery 's narrative: She starts the war with the Klingons, she plays an enormous role in dealing with the parallel universe, and she, ultimately, is the Red Angel in season 2 that sets the Discovery on her path and gets her into the far-flung future.
In short, it's almost always about Michael. Discovery' s third season opens on an episode that is entirely focused on Michael, because the rest of Discovery has yet to arrive in the future.
As you'll see in the coming episodes, that will have an impact on Burnham in more ways than one, but we already see that she has a weight off of her shoulders — she spent years acting like everything is her fault, but in the future she seems to be free of that.
The name "Burnham" does, however, have the word "burn" in it, so we're not ruling out the possibility that Michael's travel across time as the Red Angel is responsible for the destruction of all active dilithium.
If warp travel can cause rifts in space and time, who knows what Michael Burnham traveling ahead a millennium may have done? There is, however, one other classic Star Trek story worth invoking while we're listing off possible explanations for the Burn.
CBS told Mosley this was usually a fireable offence, but said no further action would be taken and asked that he not use the word again outside of a script.
Mosley chose to leave the series, quitting without informing Kurtzman and Paradise. He explained his decision in an op-ed for The New York Times in September , and CBS responded by saying "we are committed to supporting a workplace where employees feel free to express concerns".
Mosley did not identify Discovery as the series he was working on in the op-ed, but this was confirmed by CBS in their response.
The second season ended with the USS Discovery traveling over years into the future, freeing the series from the continuity of previous Star Trek series and allowing it to explore a new time period for the franchise.
Kurtzman compared this decision to that of the film Star Trek —on which he worked as a writer—starting a new timeline to avoid established continuity.
He added that it would allow the series to have "an entirely new energy for season three with a whole new set of problems".
He referred to this setting as essentially an entirely new universe, with references to previous Star Trek series being "a very distant memory" at this point.
Kurtzman confirmed that Control, the AI antagonist of the second season, was officially neutralized in that season's finale and the third season would focus on "much bigger problems".
The first episode of the season focuses on Martin-Green as Michael Burnham , alone on an unknown planet in the future until she meets new character Cleveland "Book" Booker.
The second episode follows the rest of the Discovery crew, who are reunited with Burnham in the third episode.
What are we going to do? Who are we going to be? What does this future look like? He noted that this is "exactly what we are going through right now" with the COVID pandemic, though the season was written before the pandemic so the similarities are not intentional.
She is portrayed by two Maine Coons , Leeu and Durban, who are 40 inches 1. Book describes Grudge as a "queen", and Ajala felt a lot was revealed about Book through his relationship with the cat.
In January , Kurtzman discussed the planned spin-off series to star Michelle Yeoh in her role of Philippa Georgiou from the earlier Discovery seasons.
He stated that it was not expected until after the third season of Discovery was completed, and that there were already plans for Yeoh to appear in that third season first.
Casting had begun by June for the new role of Adira, a non-binary character described as "incredibly intelligent and self-confident".
The character was set to have a major role in one episode with the potential to become a recurring guest throughout the rest of the season.
Despite the character being portrayed as 16 years old in the season, an actor 18 years or older was being looked for. Both characters were noted to be the first explicitly non-binary and transgender characters within the Star Trek franchise, respectively.
The series' opening title sequence was updated for the season by Prologue , [37] to feature red dilithium crystals, Burnham's new braided hair, DOT-7 robots, Book's ship, the new 32nd Century Starfleet badges, and the wormhole that brought Discovery to the future.
Kurtzman felt this was especially important since the series' initial logo reflects the Klingon storyline of the first season, which the series had moved on from.
This meant creating evolved versions of existing Star Trek technology to ground the season in the designs of the franchise. The season began filming in July , with six days on location in Iceland , [40] [18] before moving to Pinewood Toronto Studios in Toronto, Canada on July However, both episodes required location filming in Iceland.
Osunsanmi ultimately directed both episodes, including all of the Iceland shoot for each. Frakes then directed the third episode in Toronto.
Frakes noted that the style of the series was still "shoot to thrill", but this was toned down for the third season compared to the previous two.
By late March, post-production work for the season, including editing, visual effects, and scoring, was taking place remotely due to the COVID pandemic.
Star Trek: Discovery was the first visual effects-heavy series to go through post-production during the pandemic.
Kurtzman and Paradise reviewed visual effects shots remotely several times a week with visual effects supervisor Jason Zimmerman.
Visual effects for each episode on Discovery typically take eight-to-ten months to complete, and this took longer for the third season during the pandemic.
Since the production was unable to carry out additional photography to film pickup shots with the actors during lockdown, visual effects were used to fill these requirements.
Fully computer-generated shots were created for these, featuring digital doubles of the actors based on existing scans.
The actors filmed motion-capture performances from the houses that were then used to drive the performances of the digital doubles. By the end of January , composer Jeff Russo had written some pre-recorded music for the season but had not yet seen any of the completed episodes.
He said his approach to the season's music would not be affected by the time-jump between seasons since it was still the same series.
His intention was to record the scores with an orchestra later, once it was safe to do. Recording engineer Michael Perfitt was tasked with combining the different recordings to make them sound like the musicians were recorded together at a scoring stage, and Russo felt the final result would not be of a lower quality compared to his scores for the previous seasons.
He reiterated that though the season would feature new motifs for new characters and locations, it would still sound like Star Trek: Discovery.
Several commentators questioned whether Starfleet still existed in the universe based on dialogue in the trailer.
The images were shortly taken down due to a copyright claim from CBS, with the original account believed to be a fake. The series' cast and executive producers promoted Discovery in a virtual " Star Trek Universe" panel for the Comic-Con Home convention, where the cast of the second season's finale participated in a table read of the first act of that episode before teasing the third season of the series.
The event included a marathon of episodes from across the Star Trek franchise, with a break during the day for a series of panels about different Star Trek series.
These included a panel for Discovery featuring Martin-Green, Ajala, Kurtzman, and Paradise during which they revealed a full trailer for the season. It was accompanied by the official release of the season's key art poster.
The cast and crew discussed the season and revealed the opening scene of the season premiere. Netflix has streaming rights for the series in another countries, and releases each episode of the series for streaming within 24 hours of its U.
The website's critical consensus reads, "With less canonical baggage and a welcome dose of character development, Discovery continues to forge its own path and is narratively all the better for it.

If you don't know, dilithium is the crystalline compound that makes warp travel possible. There are other modes of warp-like travel more on that later , but Starfleet vessels were all dilithium-propelled — so when dilithium went away, Starfleet essentially went away with it.
Why did dilithium blow up, and how? Here are some theories to help you navigate Discovery' s latest season-long mystery.
Within the Star Trek canon, warp travel was already on borrowed time.
