I love to get lost in a movie, and I'm partial to supernatural thrillers "The Omen," and if you'd allow "The Chernobyl Diaries".
It's competently put together, and the acting is pretty good. It has an indie feel that I like the director seems quite talented.
I'm giving it high marks because it's better than a 3, especially given it's competition lol. For whatever reason, I couldn't get totally into it.
This is an anthology of short "found footage" films. Unlike that series, there doesn't seem to be a reason to include the three mini-stories into the overarching main story.
They just exist in between our main story for no apparent reason. Other than that small complaint, the anthology was very well done.
The overarching story or "To catch a demon" is about a trio of two scientists and a videographer attempting to catch an "inter-dimensional" being on film and end up catching alot more.
Lastly, "Amanda's Revenge" is a unique take on alien abductions. Altogether nothing to write home about but if you're a "found footage" junkie like me or have at least enjoyed some of the bigger titles out there in the sub-genre it will be worth your time to give it a once over.
I agree with some of the other reviewers that if you enjoyed VHS and films of that nature, you are more apt to enjoy this one. It seems to have had a lower budget, but still I liked it for what it was.
The acting wasn't bad, and a couple of the tales had a nice little twist. If however you are expecting a lot of fancy footwork and slick special effects, you will be disappointed.

The only problem with that story is the creature. The effects are not convincing. That is the problem with all of the creatures in this flick.
Most of the stories leave a little to be desired even in the writing. This was Millennial trash, that's what I call all these repeated found footage type stories.

Pretty good. Let's get the two good things about this movie out of the way first: there are some good performances, and it was filmed on nice cameras.
That's more than you can say about most of these found-footage style movies. There's also a decently creepy ghoul featured in "Dark Tape 1.
It's the kind of thing that pulls you right out of the movie and breaks your suspension of disbelief. And that's this movie in a nutshell: every time it musters up even slightest momentum, it immediately shoots itself in the foot with some kind of hackneyed nonsense.
It's clear that the makers of this movie knew that "Dark Tape 2" was the weakest link of the four vignettes that comprise this film.
That's why it's first, but also why a brief introduction to "Dark Tape 1" precedes it. The makers of this movie knew that the story of "Dark Tape 2" was so boneheaded and unsatisfying, that the viewer need a carrot.
That carrot is the decent premise of "Dark Tape 1. That in itself is a weird choice for a movie that later shows a man slitting his own throat on a webcam.
But moreover, why are these people murdering ghost hunters? We don't know. Why is their daughter so brazenly complicit even though she's probably like nine years old?
There is NO explaining that. It's story-breaking. And that's the real problem with this movie: every story breaks. There are some creative ideas here, and some fairly compelling pseudoscience to explain them, but not a single vignette truly holds together in terms of plot, characters, and stakes.
Otherwise, "Dark Tape 3" is just another version of "Dark Tape 2" with bonus "sexy cam girls" and a demonic possession that is mostly accomplished through slightly edgy jump-cuts that are more jarring than spooky.
It would have been nice if all of these stories connected somehow, maybe around the idea of night terrors as visits from inter-dimensional beings.
It would have been nice if the capable acting, fine cameras, and sometimes decent visual effects were used to tell stories that had any kind of point.
It would have been nice if the characters were characterized, instead of simply just made to react to stuff for 20 minutes at a time.
It would have been nice if the crew who made this scrapped the cheesy distorting camera motif that is present in all 4 "Dark Tapes" and put the time and effort they spent on annoying the viewer with senseless VFX nonsense into better developing the foundation of their film: the stories.

Caitlin, a cam girl in a lesbian relationship, video chats with her friend telling him about unexplained blackouts after going out with her girlfriend Sindy.
Caitlin says she did things she could not explain; things she would never do sober. Her friend advises her to drink less and everything should be fine.
Sindy returns home and the two prepare for a special cam session where one member from a group chat will receive a free private show.
Sindy asks Caitlin if she can convince her selection to cut himself, just a little bit. Sindy selects Gerry, a mild mannered overweight man.
Sindy walks off screen and Caitlin begins flirting with Gerry. She asks him to give her a video tour of his house. As he gives Caitlin the tour a dark figure can be seen lurking in the background.
Caitlin requests that Gerry cut his hand, which he does. Things intensify as flashes of evil are seen and the relationship between Caitlin and Gerry grows increasingly intense when she tells him to take the knife and slit his own throat.
He becomes upset at the request and asks why she would want him to commit such an act. Caitlin responds by saying it is the only way they can be together.
He is visibly straining to stop himself from cutting his own throat as she increasingly urges and seduces him into killing himself.
He stops himself only for her to become upset and again tempt him, finally succeeding as the camera feed cuts out. Later, Caitlin and Sindy show up at Gerry's house and they begin eating him.
Amanda talks directly to the camera about being abducted and kidnapped for four months and states her intention of exacting revenge on her captors.
Four month earlier, during a party, Amanda's friend Josh tells Ryan, Amanda's childhood best friend, that he saw two men carry an unconscious Amanda into a room.
Ryan and Josh break into the room, subdue the molesters, and due to quick action appear to have prevented a rape from occurring.
However, the next morning Amanda walks out in a trance suggesting she was violated in unimaginable ways.
Suddenly the entire house quakes and Amanda sleepwalks back to her room, only to awaken with no memory of the incident.
Even stranger, Ryan and Josh realize that there was no reported earthquake and everything seems fine outside.
A month later Amanda calls her friends over to watch her sleep at night. Something is wrong with Amanda and she's getting worse. However, instead of staying awake, everyone mysteriously passes out and the camera shuts down.
Amanda confides in Ryan, who is her childhood best friend, that something unexplainable has been happening in her life. She reveals telekinetic abilities to Ryan.
However, Ryan believes it to be a trick. Amanda tells him to not worry about it, 'they' are not as smart as 'they' think they are. Two months later, Amanda is living in a cabin miles from nowhere with no electricity.
However, she has recorded a video of her abductors and she shows it to Ryan. She asks Ryan to come to the cabin to help her. Ryan agrees and Amanda sets a trap to exact her revenge.
