Instead of a plot driven more visually, we have one made of dialogue and character, with a single setting. In many ways, the characters are the film.
They are real, three dimensional creations of flesh and blood. They act like real people because they are real people on the page and brought to life by an excellent cast.
The result is a small film imbued with the kind of magic that has so endeared it to most who have seen it. Sadly, Man From Earth: Holocene is none of these things.
Where the first film was an intimate evening of wonders, almost a modern day telling of tales around the campfire, this sequel is an attempt at creating a more traditional and less imaginative kind of storytelling, something familiar and mundane.
The script has none of the elegance of the original. Instead, it is plot-heavy and given to laziness where necessarily to drive the events forward.
The new characters show no depth; they exist only as devices to drive the story. Instead of developing and evolving, they change fast enough to cause whiplash.
Isabel, filled with intellectual curiosity at the possibility that a 14, year-old-man actually exists, suddenly pivots in the third act to someone who wants to follow and worship him.
The other two students are even worse. The remaining characters are little more than ciphers, the only exception being a familiar face showing up later in the film not William Katt.
The focus of the story should be the fact that John is changing, starting to age. This should be a momentous event in his life, shining a light on a part of his soul that has lain fallow for thousands of years.
Until now. With that introspection would also come a new way of looking at those around him. Where before they were transitory blips on his journey, he is finally forced to walk with them.
He once stood outside of time. Time has now reclaimed him. The dramatic potential is huge, but is never explored.
Instead, Richard Schenkman and Emerson Bixby opt to create a third rate descendant of any number of TV shows like The Fugitive or The Incredible Hulk where the main character wanders from one locale and set of character each week.
And if you doubt that this is what they have in mind, wait for the ham-fisted scene following the end credits.
As I said, this is less a review than a warning. I saw the sequel had come out The original Man from Earth is one of my favorite movies.

Compared to all movies, this is probably a two star movie. If you enjoyed the original film, avoid this sequel I was a huge fan of the first movie.

The actors deserve better that this! The first movie is a 5 star film because it is all thought provoking material centered around one specific idea.
It does a great job of setting up a potential series fingers crossed my favorite part of the movie was when John was tied up in the basement talking with the Jesusfreak.
The whole first movie was essentially That scene. I think perhaps adding youthful characters will appeal to people who need more than just talking heads.

I read some reviews that said Christians would be offended, but I wasn't. I thought both movies made for some enjoyable "what if" mental gymnastics.
Holocene does have some funny moments like the title of this review. In fact, I think people who have spent their lives in the church will "get" that, perhaps more than some less familiar with church teachings and trends.
Overall, a great couple of movies, and I do not regret paying for the sequel at all! First one was on Prime. I really would rather not leave a negative review for a movie that had three of my favorite actors in it, but OMG man what were they thinking.
Heck, I registered here just to be able to rate it, and I've praised it to my friends. Most of them liked it as well. I was thrilled when I've heard about this sequel and I was eager to watch it.

This whole thing was a feeble as any commercial tv movie. The casting was so terrible. Every-time they started a chapter with those kids in it I totally fast-forwarded or simply just skipped the whole chapter completely.
The other big disappointment was the whole impotence crap. The same garbage all of the other movies for the last two decades have been shoving upon us.
The limitations of their imaginations result in stealing really bad and really Lame ideas from other movies. Don't remind me again as to what we had to tolerate from that movie "Logan".
While reviews can be wrong, this one is not. I do feel bad for the actors. I'd like to be able to tell you to buy this right now, but I'm just not an Evil man.
